Can I Clean My Own Carpets And Save The Cost Of Professional Carpet Cleaning Services?

No one can really claim not feeling the effects of the tough economic strains that we are experiencing today. As consumers, we are most affected as bills pile up from all corners of our lives. It is therefore no wonder that some people would rather do their own carpet cleaning than employ professional carpet cleaning services.

In the somewhat unfair turn, even cleaning one’s own carpets comes with its own handful of challenges. Very few people are actually confident that they can carry out the exercise and achieve as good results as a professional cleaner would, and what other challenges will one be facing in the process?

Now, it’s a fact that anyone can clean their own carpets, provided they have the right tools and the time. Most cleaning machines are pretty simple to operate. However, how to get such a machine is always the first challenge. It is obviously irrational to buy an expensive carpet cleaning machine for home use only. That leaves one with the option of hiring a cleaning machine from the grocery nearby, where you will also get a variety of cleaning agents and instructions for using them.

Given the tonnes upon tonnes of information on the internet on how one can make their own cleaning agents at home, home owners have another reason to avoid professional carpet cleaning services that will use off-the-shelf products and pass the cost to them. Considering these facts, it sounds a pretty good idea to avoid the high charging cleaning companies. But before we settle for this idea, let’s take a look at the other side of the coin.

When you choose to go the do-it-yourself way, it is most likely going to be the first time. The only knowledge you will therefore depend on is the instructions provided on using the cleaning machines, and zero experience. What are the implications of these? Most likely, you will over saturate the carpets or use overheated water on them. As a result, the glue holding your carpet fibres will get loose and your carpet’s life reduced significantly. You also risk your health due to moulds that are likely to develop as a result of the excessive soaking.

Another thing that is likely to happen with inexperience is wrong application of the cleaning agents leading to bleaching of the carpets. Let me try to save you on this. Contrary to what you most likely think, the white section of your carpet also has a dye – a white dye. Should you bleach this section, therefore, the results are obvious: the dye is removed as with it goes the bright attractive white colour.

Let us now sum up the points we highlighted. You have hired a cleaning machine from the grocery and bought or prepared the cleaning agents – mostly bought as this will work well with the machine. The total cost of this will definitely be lower than what you would pay for carpet cleaning services, but let’s focus on the difference. Is the difference worth the time you will take to prepare for the cleaning, right from going to the grocery to moving all your furniture and getting your hands on the actual dirty job? Have you thought about the possible damages that may occur during the process as well as personal injuries?

I would like to hear your view on this. Be sure to share your though by posting a comment below.
